Willie Torbert

October 15 - November 19, 2020

Before the threat of a worldwide pandemic, we had immense excitement to share Willie Torbert’s artwork with you all in his second solo show planned for this past June. The time has finally come for us to open our doors and welcome you all back. Nothing would be more fitting than a show featuring Willie to start us off!

It has been an inspiration to witness Willie producing this new series throughout 2020. Every time we visited Willie in his studio, we were met with high energy, enthusiasm towards his new work, and a positive attitude. Visiting Wille was like getting the best therapy session one could ask for. You just left feeling happy. His work emulates love, something we could all use a little more of right now no doubt.

Torbert has spent his life exploring African American culture through creative and complex collage art. He produces highly stylized representations of a wide variety of mostly Afro-Centric themes from musicians and heroic warriors to everyday people. By building up layers of various mediums including collage, watercolor, printmaking, and pencil techniques, he has masterfully created his repertoire of textures and patterns to depict composite scenes of African American life.

Our plans may have changed, but nonetheless, we are thrilled to finally invite you and up to 9 friends to join us for a night out at the gallery.

For the safety of our visitors and us alike, the opening event will be spread out during the course of the exhibit. Detour will offer limited spots every Thursday evening starting October 15th at 6 PM. Reservations can be made by visiting our website, www.detourgallery.com, or calling us at 732.704.3115
